Finding a dependable daycare spot in Calgary is challenging enough — but when a long-standing program suddenly closes, it can leave families in crisis mode.
Highland Park residents are facing exactly that dilemma. NEXT Kids Daycare, which has served the northwest community for a decade, is shutting down June 30 after the Highland Park Community Association declined to renew its lease.
The Impact on Local Families
For parents like Anna De Vries, the timing couldn't be worse. With her son integrated into the program and strong friendships formed, the closure means scrambling for summer arrangements — historically one of the most difficult times to secure childcare.
"He made lots of friends in the program... friends that left because they had to go elsewhere. It's hard to see those friendships end," De Vries said.
Terry Egenschwiler, a parent with two boys in the program, expressed frustration about the uncertainty ahead.
"We've sort of scrambled, we've tried to make plans but mostly we're just sort of hopeful the board will come to their senses and get this program renewed."
What Daycare Owner Says
Sumeet Sra, owner of NEXT Kids Daycare, emphasized the emotional toll on staff who have built genuine connections with children and families over the years.
"When you build those bonds with the children and you're with them for the majority of the day, and we have good relationships with our parents, it's disheartening," Sra said.
Sra has been actively searching for alternative locations, reaching out to community centres, churches, and commercial properties across the area — so far without success.
Community Association's Plan Forward
According to the Highland Park Community Association, NEXT Kids was notified last June that the lease would end in March 2026. The association then negotiated a temporary extension through June to coincide with the school year.
The association says it is now exploring opportunities to establish a not-for-profit before and after school care model, with a volunteer board of directors leading the search. However, officials acknowledge the initiative remains in early stages.
For Calgary parents dealing with daycare challenges, resources like Calgary Forums can be invaluable for connecting with other families navigating similar situations and sharing local childcare recommendations.
