Edmonton Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch is liking what he sees — and he's not shy about saying who deserves the credit.
Speaking to reporters, Knoblauch singled out defenceman Connor Murphy and forward Jason Dickinson as key pieces in the Oilers' recent defensive transformation, saying the two trade deadline acquisitions have done more than fill roster spots — they've helped define the kind of team Edmonton wants to be.
"The defensive side of our game has grown considerably," Knoblauch noted, pointing to the structure, discipline, and compete level the two veterans have brought to the lineup since joining the club.
Identity Through Adversity
For a squad that has long been associated with its offensive firepower — built around superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl — the Oilers' shift toward a more defensively responsible identity marks a notable evolution. Knoblauch has been pushing for that balance all season, and in Murphy and Dickinson, he appears to have found players who embody it.
Murphy, a rugged stay-at-home defenceman, brings the kind of physical, positionally sound play that cleans up loose ends in the Oilers' own zone. Dickinson, known for his penalty-killing ability and strong two-way game, adds grit and accountability at the forward level.
"Those guys have really solidified who we are and how we want to play," Knoblauch said of the pair.

The additions come at a critical time for Edmonton, as the club looks to position itself as a legitimate Stanley Cup contender — not just a team that can outscore problems, but one that can win when goals are hard to come by.
