Cochrane RCMP have dealt a significant blow to drug trafficking operations in the region, announcing the seizure of nearly half a million dollars worth of illicit drugs and the arrest of four suspects following a two-month investigation.
The Cochrane RCMP Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) launched their probe in March after identifying a suspect allegedly moving large quantities of drugs between Cochrane and Canmore. Officers determined the individual was sourcing wholesale-level narcotics from Calgary and distributing them throughout the Bow Valley corridor.
First Seizure Nets Fentanyl, Cocaine, and Counterfeit Pills
On May 14, officers executed a search that yielded a substantial haul: 1.6 kilograms of fentanyl and cocaine, along with 2,000 counterfeit Xanax tablets. Police note that these counterfeit pills frequently contain synthetic opioids even more potent than fentanyl—a critical public health concern given the ongoing opioid crisis gripping Alberta communities.
Two Canmore residents were charged following that raid. One suspect, aged 30, now faces an additional 10 charges for breaching bail conditions.
Second Calgary Operation Uncovers Firearm, More Drugs
Two weeks later, on May 27, RCMP executed simultaneous searches at two Calgary residences, uncovering 500 grams of cocaine and fentanyl, 1,100 synthetic opioid tablets, and a prohibited firearm. Two Calgary residents in their 30s were arrested and charged with drug trafficking and weapons-related offences.
Combined, the two operations removed approximately $490,000 worth of drugs from circulation on Alberta's streets.
Officers Emphasize Community Impact
"The opioid epidemic affecting our cities is real," a Cochrane RCMP constable stated in the announcement. "We're watching these overdoses happen in our communities. When units take seizures like this off the streets, it's absolutely critical to harm reduction in our small communities."
RCMP indicated that follow-up investigations stemming from both operations are underway.
