A shooting at the Mall of Louisiana in Lafayette has left one person dead and five others injured, with authorities now holding five suspects in custody as they continue investigating the incident.

The violence erupted Thursday evening after an argument between two groups escalated in the mall's food court, according to Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr. Several bystanders uninvolved in the initial dispute were struck by gunfire.

Emergency responders transported 10 people to local hospitals following the incident. One victim underwent emergency surgery, three others sustained minor injuries, and another suffered what police described as "very minor" injuries. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.

Search Continues for Additional Suspects

Police Chief Morse emphasized that authorities are actively searching for additional individuals who may have participated in the shooting. He did not disclose details about those currently in custody or potential charges they may face.

"We're gonna catch you," Baton Rouge Mayor Sid Edwards said in a statement addressing those responsible. "We're not gonna have this in Baton Rouge. It's not gonna happen. I have complete confidence in our law enforcement partners that we're gonna go out and grab these guys and get them off the street."

Community Response and Investigation

Lafayette Mayor Monique Blanco Boulet confirmed that three of the victims are seniors from Ascension Episcopal School, a private institution in Lafayette. She did not provide additional details about their conditions or identities.

Police Chief Morse appealed to the public for assistance, asking anyone with information or cellphone video of the shooting to contact authorities. The FBI's New Orleans field office said it is "aware of and responding to the incident" in coordination with local law enforcement.

Officials have confirmed the incident is no longer an active shooter situation. Lafayette is located approximately 50 miles east of Baton Rouge.
