On March 5, California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a BMW being driven at high speed and erratically on U.S. 101 in Ventura County. Officers conducted field sobriety tests and arrested Spears on suspicion of driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs. She was transported to county jail and released several hours later.
The case was forwarded to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office on March 23. Prosecutors are expected to make charging decisions before a May 4 court date.

Following the arrest, Spears' representative issued a statement calling the incident "completely inexcusable" and suggested the treatment decision would represent "the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life."
