RCMP have arrested an 18-year-old Saskatchewan man in connection with a fatal highway shooting south of Edmonton that claimed the life of a young driver earlier this month.

Jimmy Gassner faces second-degree murder charges following the March 14 incident on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway near Leduc that killed 22-year-old Birinder Singh.

According to police, Singh and two friends were travelling to the mountains when a pickup truck pulled alongside their Honda Civic. Witnesses told investigators that someone in the truck made what appeared to be a peace sign gesture toward their vehicle.

Singh reportedly waved back in response, but moments later, gunfire erupted from the pickup truck. A single bullet struck Singh in the neck, proving fatal.

The two surviving passengers quickly took control of the steering wheel and managed to pull their vehicle to the roadside, potentially preventing further tragedy on the busy highway.

Gassner was apprehended in Saskatchewan and now faces charges in Alberta's court system.

"Despite the laying of these charges, we know that there will be many questions regarding suspects and motivations," said Staff Sgt. John Brown of the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit. "Please understand that our ability to answer these questions is limited while our officers continue their important work."

The seemingly random nature of the attack has shocked communities across Alberta, particularly given the apparent lack of connection between the victims and accused.

The Queen Elizabeth II Highway serves as a major transportation corridor connecting Edmonton to Calgary and is frequently travelled by Albertans heading to mountain destinations for recreation.

RCMP continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including any potential motives behind the attack.
