A tragedy unfolded Friday morning in rural Ontario when a small aerobatic biplane crashed into an open field near Fergus, killing both occupants instantly.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene near Beatty Line and Wellington Road 17 around 10:15 a.m. after receiving frantic reports of the aircraft going down. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the plane engulfed in flames and moved quickly to extinguish the blaze.

Training Flight Gone Wrong

According to the Transportation Safety Board (TSB), the amateur-built sporting biplane had departed from Fergus airport approximately 15 minutes earlier at 10 a.m., embarking on what was meant to be a routine aerobatic training exercise. The flight would never reach its destination.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed that both individuals aboard the aircraft were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later identified them as experienced pilots, adding another layer of puzzlement to the incident.

Investigation Underway

The TSB stated it will conduct a comprehensive investigation into the crash in the coming days, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses to determine what caused the catastrophic failure. OPP cleared the crash site around noon Saturday after completing preliminary scene documentation.

The exact cause of the crash remains unknown at this time, though investigators will examine aircraft maintenance records, weather conditions, and pilot communications as part of their systematic review.

"Both occupants were experienced pilots," the TSB confirmed, suggesting mechanical failure or sudden weather conditions rather than pilot error as potential factors.
