A 62-year-old Westlock resident has died following a single-vehicle motorcycle collision that occurred late Friday evening on Highway 44 in Westlock County.

Alberta RCMP responded to the scene at approximately 11:20 p.m. on Friday, just north of Township Road 602. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, with no other vehicles involved in the crash.

According to investigators, the motorcycle encountered a curve in the roadway, rolled, and left the highway before coming to rest in the ditch. RCMP collision analyst attended the scene to reconstruct the incident and determine the speed at which the motorcycle was travelling at the time of impact.

"There was a curve in the road, and we can confirm that the bike rolled when it hit that curve and went off the roadway and into the ditch," explained Alberta RCMP Cpl. Teri-Ann Bakker in a statement released Tuesday.

Safety Reminder for Riders

The incident underscores the heightened risks riders face on Alberta highways. Unlike occupants of enclosed vehicles, motorcyclists have minimal protection in collision scenarios and must maintain heightened awareness of road conditions, weather, and speed relative to curves and terrain.

"Motorcyclists certainly have to be more aware of their surroundings and there are a lot of factors that have to be put into play when you're on a motorcycle, versus being in a collision," Cpl. Bakker noted.

The RCMP investigation into the exact circumstances of the collision remains ongoing.
