Nagwan Al-Guneid, the NDP member representing Calgary-Glenmore in the Alberta legislature, has announced she will not run for a second term in the upcoming provincial election.
Al-Guneid, who currently serves as the opposition critic for energy and minerals, made the announcement in a statement Wednesday, describing the decision as difficult but deliberate.
"After a great deal of thought and reflection, I have made the difficult decision that I will not seek a second term in the next provincial election," Al-Guneid stated. "I believe that public service is not just a job, it's a calling and it does not begin or end with holding elected office. There are many ways to contribute, and I look forward to continuing to serve Alberta in a different capacity in the future."
Al-Guneid's decision marks the end of a relatively brief tenure at the legislature. Elected in 2023, she flipped the Calgary-Glenmore riding from the United Conservative Party, defeating incumbent Whitney Issik.
Energy Sector Experience
Before entering provincial politics, Al-Guneid built a career focused on energy transition and corporate strategy. She previously worked as a corporate communications advisor in TotalEnergies' oilsands division, followed by roles as government relations manager at the Energy Futures Lab, a think tank examining energy sector transformation.
Most recently, she served as director of the Business Renewables Centre Canada, an organization driving large-scale renewable energy projects and procurement initiatives across the country.
Al-Guneid's departure opens the door for a competitive race in Calgary-Glenmore as the province prepares for the next provincial election scheduled for fall 2025.
