Alberta RCMP have made a significant breakthrough in a three-year murder investigation, charging a 21-year-old man with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on Child Lake reserve in July 2023.
The investigation began after officers responded to a call at a residence on the reserve, one of two communities that comprise Beaver Lake First Nation in northern Alberta. Upon arrival, police discovered a 48-year-old man who had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Alberta RCMP's major crimes unit took the lead on the complex investigation, which spanned more than three years before culminating in an arrest last Saturday. The accused, a resident of the reserve, was taken into custody and subsequently remanded pending trial.
What Happens Next
The accused is scheduled to appear before a justice of the peace on October 1 at the Court of Justice in High Level, Alberta—a town located approximately 600 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, positioned west of the Child Lake reserve.
First-degree murder is one of Canada's most serious criminal charges, carrying a mandatory life sentence with eligibility for parole determined by the court.
