Calgary's Beltline community is mourning the loss of one of its most recognizable residents following a fatal assault that claimed the life of Howard Gordon Hunter, 67, over the weekend.
Calgary Police responded to reports of an assault near the 800 block of 17th Avenue S.W. on Saturday. Officers arrived to find Hunter in medical distress. Despite immediate life-saving efforts at the scene, he was pronounced dead, the Calgary Police Service confirmed in a statement released Monday.
Hunter was identified following an autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Those who knew him describe the lifelong Beltline resident as an unmistakable fixture of the neighbourhood — a familiar face whose presence had become woven into the fabric of the community for years.
Danny James Turkitch, 68, has been charged with manslaughter in connection with Hunter's death, police announced Monday.
Community Remembers a Neighbourhood Landmark
In the days following the tragedy, a growing memorial has taken shape in Tomkins Park near where Hunter died. Handwritten notes and flowers left by friends and neighbours serve as a testament to the impact he had on those around him. Many in the Beltline describe him as an eccentric character whose daily presence made the neighbourhood feel alive and connected.
The loss has sent shockwaves through a community that, despite its urban setting, maintains tight-knit bonds among its residents. Hunter's death marks a significant loss for an area already grappling with complex social issues.
Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Calgary Police Service.
