Calgary-based Keyera Corp. is making bold moves to cement its position as a major player in Canada's energy infrastructure, announcing a $1.2-billion deal to take full ownership of the KAPS Pipeline in northern Alberta.

The acquisition from New York investment firm Stonepeak represents a significant bet on the company's long-term growth strategy. Keyera will now own 100 per cent of the 575-kilometre pipeline system that moves natural gas liquids and condensate from the prolific Montney and Duvernay resource plays to downstream markets near Fort Saskatchewan.

The move underscores Keyera's aggressive capital deployment strategy. To fund the purchase and other growth initiatives, the company raised over $1.6 billion this week through a combination of equity offerings and debt issuance — a substantial mobilization of resources that signals confidence in the company's future revenue potential.

Strategic Flexibility and Control

"Full ownership of KAPS provides greater flexibility and efficiency for our customers while enhancing Keyera's exposure to long-term growth," said Dean Setoguchi, Keyera's president and chief executive, in a statement announcing the transaction.

By taking complete control of the infrastructure, Keyera gains the ability to optimize operations independently, negotiate directly with shippers, and make capital decisions without consulting a partner. Industry analysts view this as a calculated move to extract maximum value from one of western Canada's key midstream assets.

Expansion in Uncertain Times

The deal comes on the heels of another major acquisition that drew scrutiny from federal regulators, indicating the company is willing to navigate regulatory challenges to achieve its growth objectives. Keyera's strategy appears focused on consolidating control of critical pipeline infrastructure while demand for natural gas products remains robust.

The KAPS Pipeline, which became operational in phases, has become a vital transportation corridor for producers in the Montney formation, one of North America's most prolific natural gas regions. Keyera's full ownership position now gives it a commanding stake in moving these critical products to market.
