A Toronto-based payroll and employment services company is making waves in the global workforce market by introducing cryptocurrency as a payment option for employees—marking a significant shift in how companies compensate their workers.

Borderless AI, which provides employer of record (EOR) and payroll services to businesses worldwide, has launched a new crypto-native payroll system that allows both domestic and international employees to receive compensation in digital currencies alongside traditional payment methods.

The move reflects growing momentum in the cryptocurrency sector. Global crypto transaction volumes are projected to exceed $3 trillion annually, with nearly 559 million users worldwide adopting digital assets. In the United States, approximately four out of 10 merchants now accept cryptocurrency at checkout, while countries like Switzerland and Japan have embraced bitcoin in commerce despite it not holding official legal tender status.

Meeting Employee Expectations in a Competitive Labour Market

"We're seeing a fundamental shift in the global employment market," says Willson Cross, Co-Founder and CEO of Borderless AI. "The conversation has evolved beyond allowing people to work anywhere to empowering them to be paid in any way that matches their own investment and currency preferences."

For companies operating across multiple countries with diverse workforces, the traditional one-size-fits-all compensation model no longer reflects the realities of modern employment. Cross notes that considering each country's unique currencies and savings options is essential for competitive hiring.

"Companies that adapt and offer flexible options to employees, including crypto, go a long way in building an invested workforce," Cross adds. "The global hiring market remains competitive, and those willing to meet employees where they are—financially and digitally—will have an advantage in attracting and retaining talent."

The platform's crypto-native payroll feature represents Borderless AI's latest effort to modernize compensation structures for the digital age, giving employees greater autonomy over how they receive and manage their earnings.
